Traditional Use Fangfeng is an acrid, sweet and slightly warm herb that enters the bladder, liver and spleen meridians. It releases the exterior, expels wind and dampness, alleviates pain and stops tremors. It is also useful for itchy skin conditions caused by wind such as rashes, eczma, boils and rubella and acne on the upper body. In patients suffering from a disharmony between the liver and spleen, fangfeng can treat diarrhea, bleeding and abdominal pain.

Modern Use Fangji has been used in studies to treat patients suffering from hypertension, coronary artery disorders, silicosis and lung cancer with good results.

Traditional Use Fangji is bitter and very cold in nature, and enters the bladder, lung and kidney meridians to expel wind and dampness, alleviate pain and promote urination. Its diuretic properties make it useful for reducing oedema and treating the pain caused by heat and dampness

History of Use First appeared in Materia Medica of Ri Hua-Zi.

Modern Use In vitro studies have showed that zhiheshouwu can protect the liver by inhibiting lipid oxidation and the destruction of liver cells. It has also been found to lower the blood cholesterol, triglycerides and β- lipoproteins of high lipid animals.

Traditional Use Also known as Fleece Flower, zhiheshouwu is sweet and warm in nature and targets the liver and kidney meridians. It acts as a blood tonic, a laxative, lowers cholesterol and has antibacterial properties. It is useful for tonifying the liver, replenishing blood and yin, and tonifying the kidneys to prevent the premature greying of hair and hair loss.

Origin and Sources Derived from the tuberous roots of Polygonum multiflorum Thumb., family Polygonaceae. When prepared by drying it is known as crude sample. If prepared by steaming with the juice of black soya beans, it is referred to as prepared sample.

Its primary use is to drain dampness and promote urination, making it a useful treatment for oedema. It also calms the spirit, resolving conditions including insomnia and palpitations.
