Traditional Use Niuxi comes from the roots of the cyathula plant, which is native to Sichuan province. Bitter and sour, this herb is neutral in nature. It is associated with the liver and kidney meridians and is able to activate circulation, promote urination, tonify the liver and kidney, and direct fire and blood downwards. It is one of the strongest herbs for treating disorders caused by blood stasis such a menstrual pain, irregular or missing periods and postnatal pain or abnormal bleeding. It tonifies the kidneys, which are the source of healthy hair.

Modern Use Nuzhenzi has immunostimulant, anti-diabetic, haematological, anti-inflamatory, antibiotic and hepaprotective effects. It has been used with good results to treat chronic hepatitis and high cholesterol.
Traditional Use Nuzhenzi is made from the ripe fruits of the ligustrum, or glossy privet plant. Bitter and sweet tasting, this cooling herb enters the kidney and liver meridians to tonify the liver and kidney, clear heat and brighten the eyes. It also improves the supply of nutrition to the hair follicles, preventing premature greying of hair and promoting hair growth.
